At Renbrook School, learning extends beyond the classroom and into the values that shape our community. Through meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and student leadership, we strive to create an environment where every member of our community feels seen, valued, and respected. This commitment to diversity and belonging at Renbrook School was on full display in June as members of the Student Diversity and Belonging Council led presentations for their Upper School peers on LGBTQ+ Pride Month and Juneteenth.

Composed of eighth-grade student leaders, the Student Diversity and Belonging Council plays an important role in helping foster understanding, empathy, and inclusion among students in grades 5 through 8. Throughout the year, council members research important topics, develop presentations, and facilitate conversations that encourage learning and reflection. Their work supports Renbrook’s mission of preparing students to engage thoughtfully with the world around them while building a strong sense of community and belonging.

During an Upper School Morning Meeting in June, council members delivered presentations highlighting the significance of both LGBTQ+ Pride Month and Juneteenth. These student-led learning opportunities invited peers to explore history, celebrate diversity, and consider ways to contribute to a more inclusive community.

Learning About LGBTQ+ Pride Month

The council’s presentation on LGBTQ+ Pride Month focused on understanding identity, respect, inclusion, and community. Students explained that LGBTQ+ is an umbrella term encompassing a range of identities and experiences. They discussed the importance of respecting individuals’ identities, including the use of names and pronouns, and emphasized how kindness and respect help create welcoming environments for everyone.

Council members also explored the history of Pride Month, including the significance of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising and its role in advancing LGBTQ+ rights. Students highlighted influential leaders and changemakers such as Marsha P. Johnson, Harvey Milk, Sylvia Rivera, and Laverne Cox, whose advocacy helped promote equality, visibility, and inclusion.

The presentation encouraged students to consider the role they can play as allies by listening respectfully, standing up to bullying, using inclusive language, and helping to create safe spaces where all individuals feel valued. Through these discussions, council members reinforced the idea that diversity strengthens communities and that every person deserves respect and belonging.

Exploring the History and Significance of Juneteenth

Student Diversity and Belonging Council members also presented on Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Texas learned they were free. Students explained the historical context surrounding Juneteenth and discussed its importance as a celebration of freedom, resilience, and community.

The presentation examined the impact of the Emancipation Proclamation and the delay in communicating freedom to enslaved people in Texas. Council members helped peers understand why Juneteenth remains an important part of American history and why learning about the past is essential to building a more just and inclusive future.

Students also shared how Juneteenth is celebrated across the country through festivals, family gatherings, music, storytelling, educational events, and community service. They highlighted traditions associated with the holiday and reflected on the values of freedom, justice, and equality that Juneteenth represents.

Student Leadership in Action

One of the most powerful aspects of these presentations was that they were created and delivered by students for students. By researching important topics, developing educational content, and presenting to their peers, members of the Student Diversity and Belonging Council demonstrated leadership, initiative, and a commitment to fostering understanding within the Renbrook community.

These experiences reflect the school’s belief that students learn best when they actively engage with meaningful ideas and share their learning with others. Through their work, council members helped classmates deepen their understanding of diverse perspectives while encouraging thoughtful conversations about respect, inclusion, and belonging.

Fostering Inclusion and Understanding

The work of the Student Diversity and Belonging Council is an important part of promoting diversity and belonging at Renbrook School. By creating opportunities for students to learn about different experiences, cultures, and histories, the council helps strengthen the sense of community that defines the Renbrook experience.

As the school year came to a close, these June presentations served as a reminder that learning is not only about acquiring knowledge but also about developing empathy, understanding, and respect for others. Through student leadership and meaningful dialogue, Renbrook students continue to bring learning to life while building a community where everyone has the opportunity to belong.
