The West Hartford Police Department has a K-9 Unit and employs a number of dogs to enhance the department's mission of maintaining public safety. Officer Nick Roman will discuss the use of dogs in police work and will be accompanied by his police dog, Axel. Officer Roman will park his police car in the courtyard, so if you see his cruiser in the courtyard you'll know that this visit is made in conjunction with the Grade 7 Dog Unit.
Therapy dogs have brought a wealth of comfort, companionship, and love to people of all ages. Today during science class (10:45 or 11:30), Marilyn Douglas and "Beau" (her lab/basset hound mix) will bring along "Bella" (West Highland White Terrier) and owner Linda Pereira, and "Jake" (white Golden Retriever) and owner Laurie Olson, to add much joy to the 7th graders. Don't be surprised if you hear that your child spent much of the time lying on the floor petting a dog.
During science class time (11:30 or 12:45). Steve Famiglietti returns with his guide dog Joel to explain how a guide dog changed his life and allowed him to do many daily life activities without relying on friends or family. This presentation is important because the 7th graders will greater appreciate how a Fidelco Guide Dog is such a liberating presence for a visually impaired or blind person. Steve works at Oak Hill, an institution in Hartford that provides services to people with disabilities. Begun in 1893 as a school for blind children, it expanded its mission to include all people with disabilities.
Delicious baked items from Joe Zoni's kitchen will be sold. All proceeds will go to the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation in Bloomfield, CT. Fidelco raises and trains guide dogs and places them, for free, with people who are blind or visually impaired. Thus, donations to support Fidelco's efforts are much needed. This bake sale and Friday's Fund Raiser extravaganza are the major fund raising efforts of the seventh grade's year. This is the culmination of the Dog Unit. Snow date is Friday February 21st.

Toddlers and their caregivers are invited to join us at the Early Learning Center at Renbrook School on Friday, February 21 from 1:30 - 2:30 for a special "Under the Sea" performance with Ariel, Prince Eric, and more of your favorite characters. A Tea Party of cookies and milk and a craft activity will follow. Gather your friends and join us! This event is free and open to the public. Space is limited.
