Since joining Renbrook in 2017, Katie Dawson has brought energy, artistry, and heart to her role as Music Department Chair in the Upper School. Working with students in Grades 5 through 8, she leads music and performing arts classes, directs choral ensembles, and oversees the annual Upper School musical theater production. Her work ensures that music remains a dynamic and meaningful part of the Renbrook experience.
Katie earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music Education from The Hartt School at the University of Hartford. Before arriving at Renbrook, she spent six years teaching in local public schools, where she refined her craft as an educator and performer. She has loved school her entire life and always knew she wanted to become a teacher. As a student, she felt a deep sense of belonging in school and was inspired by the teachers who nurtured her talents and passions.
In her classroom and rehearsal spaces, Katie is committed to creating powerful artistic experiences that build confidence, teamwork, and joy. She believes that performing arts offer students the opportunity to express themselves, take creative risks, and experience the thrill of collaboration. Whether preparing for a concert or stepping into the spotlight for the school musical, her students are encouraged to grow both musically and personally.
Katie loves Renbrook’s kind and enthusiastic students, supportive families, and colleagues who truly feel like family. She values the sense of community that surrounds every performance and rehearsal. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. She once considered pursuing a career as an opera singer before discovering her love for musical theater. She enjoys seeing live theater, listening to Broadway cast albums, and occasionally performing herself.Â
