Gretchen Hathaway

Editor in Chief, Renbrook Magazine

University of Illinois - B.A.

Margaret V. Hathaway, known throughout the Renbrook community as Gretchen, has been part of the school’s story since 1979. Few individuals have shaped and witnessed as much of Renbrook’s history as she has. Today, she serves as Editor of Renbrook Magazine, where she brings together the voices of students, faculty, and especially alumni. Interviewing graduates from across the decades allows her to see the lasting impact of the school and to celebrate the many paths that begin on Avon Mountain.

Gretchen holds a B.A. in European History from the University of Illinois and previously served as Co-director of the Connecticut Coalition of Food Co-ops. Over more than 40 years at Renbrook, she has worn many hats. She has been an English and History teacher, English Department Chair, Sixth Grade Coordinator, Upper School advisor, advisor to the Globe literary magazine, Human Growth and Development teacher and coordinator, Secondary School Advisor, Registrar, Receptionist, Summer Adventure staff member, and Project Adventure Leader. Her career reflects both versatility and a deep commitment to the life of the school.

Her greatest joy in teaching was working with middle school students as they encountered the joys of literature and developed into confident writers. She often reflects that teaching is learning, always fresh and surprising. That spirit of curiosity continues to guide her writing and editorial work today.

Gretchen believes Renbrook stands apart because it strives to bring out the best in every person, student, teacher, staff member, and parent alike. The school’s values of courtesy, respect, hard work, creativity, and shared purpose have sustained her dedication for decades.

Outside of school, Gretchen enjoys hiking, kayaking, reading, writing, music, theater, and dance. Her daughter, Rachel Engers Bridenbaugh ’89, lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Gretchen is the proud grandmother of three granddaughters. At home, she is accompanied by her sweet, orange cat.
