Ben Digel

University of Richmond - B.A., University of Saint Joseph - M.A.

Ben Digel has been part of the Renbrook community since 2020 and serves as a Grade Three teacher in the Lower School. He teaches reading, writing, math, and social studies to eight- and nine-year-olds, guiding students through a year of growing independence and confidence. Ben earned his BA in History and Sociology from the University of Richmond and his MA in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Saint Joseph. He has also participated in intensive workshops in Responsive Classroom and Lucy Calkins Writer’s Workshop, strengthening his commitment to building strong classroom communities and fostering thoughtful writers.

Ben’s career in education began with City Year, where he served as a corps member providing classroom support. He then spent three years teaching first and second grade at Achievement Prep and four years as a first-grade teacher at Browne Academy before joining Renbrook. Each experience shaped his understanding of child development and the importance of nurturing both academic skills and character.

He loves working with children because no two days are ever the same. Their spontaneity, humor, and growth make teaching both challenging and deeply rewarding. Ben is especially committed to supporting students’ social-emotional development alongside their academics. Morning meetings, collaborative group work, immersive simulations like the Oregon Trail, and the many teachable moments woven throughout the school day help students learn empathy, resilience, and teamwork.

Ben values Renbrook’s emphasis on a well-rounded education, small class sizes, classroom autonomy, and the opportunity to design creative social studies units that bring history to life. He was born and raised in West Hartford and feels proud to teach in his hometown community. Outside of school, he enjoys skiing, golf, volleyball, and spending time with his wife, their two children, and their dog. He often reminds his students, “You don’t know it… yet,” encouraging them to embrace challenges and trust in their ability to grow.
