Specialty Sessions

Passionate about writing? Are you a budding scientist? Looking to up your game? Our specialty camp sessions held throughout the summer are a perfect choice! Each specialty camp session takes a deeper dive into one of our themed areas while providing opportunities to balance the camp day with a variety of other activities.

Camp Day Options
Full-Day Only Camps (8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)
Led by specialists, these camps focus on days filled with instruction and hands-on experiences. All specialty week campers have a lunch break and camp-provided snack incorporated into their day.

Half-Day or Full-Day Camps (Half-Day: 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Full-Day: 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)
Some specialty sessions are half-day, with the option to extend to a full-day. In the morning, theme-specific specialists lead these camps. Campers opting to stay for the full-day have their afternoons filled with recreation activities through participation in our free-choice program and an optional free swim. Both half-day and full-day campers will have a lunch break and camp-provided snack incorporated into their day.

Please note: Due to the focused nature of these programs, specialty session campers will not participate in swim lessons. Campers should be entering the grades listed in the Fall of 2019.

  • STEAM

    Building on our highly successful and innovative STEAM program at Renbrook School, summer is an opportunity to dive more deeply into a particular passion. Campers experience hands-on, inquiry-based activities in our school’s dedicated science and technology rooms. The goal is to excite campers who love science, technology, and engineering while integrating math and language arts into daily activities.
  • Sports

    Led by Renbrook's athletic department, the focus will be on fundamental instruction, hands-on experience, skills, and drills. Gameplay and scrimmages will give your sports enthusiast every opportunity to develop and showcase their athletic talents. The goal of our sports week is to develop each camper's skills based on individual needs and aspirations for their sport.
  • Scholastics

    Summer is a time to re-charge the learning batteries, but in the fast-paced world of today, maintaining skills give an advantage in the new school year in the fall. Renbrook School Summer Adventure will offer a variety of ways to stay connected to the academic mindset and have fun while doing so.

  • Advanced Creative Writing - Grades 5 - 10

    Back for her third summer at RSSA, Melissa Rank will lead campers in Advanced Creative Writing; a specialty camp designed for students to create forms of descriptive writing, drama, poetry, and fiction. Vocabulary development, creative writing technique, and skills are explored throughout the week. Each camper will create unique works that might include fiction, poetry or essays. The entire group will publish an eBook of all of their combined works.

  • Bienvenue En France - Grades 1 - 4

    No need to take the airplane, come to Renbrook and take a dip into the French world with Renbrook World Language teacher Madame Tannoux. Campers will have a hands-on initiation to French language and culture by reading French stories, playing French games, cooking French delicacies and more!

  • Circuitry Week - Grades 7 - 10

    Ever wonder how electronics work? How does a lamp dimmer really know how bright to make the light? How does a speaker produce different sounds? In this specialty week, campers will learn the basics of electrical circuitry by dissecting existing electronics, exploring the science and engineering behind the different components that are commonly found in electronics, and by building their own projects! Come join us in this special program from the popular Technology, Engineering, and Design (TED) team, and see what you manage to wire up!

  • Creative Writing - Grades 3 - 6

    (Two-week commitment)
    Gathering together a community of young writers and readers, this specialty session helps campers develop the vocabulary and critical-thinking skills necessary to produce and discuss writing in sophisticated ways. Students will explore and author a range of writing assignments, some of which they choose themselves with the instructor’s guidance. At the end of the two-week session, the entire group will have the option to publish an e-book of their combined works.

  • Gymnastics - Grades K - 4

    June 24 - 28
    Gymnasts will spend the week learning gymnastics in a non-competitive environment. Focus will be on basic skills development on beam, floor, and uneven bars while keeping it fun. Each day will start with a group stretch followed by work on at least two events. Dance and strength work will also be introduced for each event. On Friday participants will travel to The Gymnastics Training Center in Simsbury to utilize the spring floor, tumble trak, and trampoline.

  • Legos - Simple Machines - Grades 2 - 6

    July 22 - Aug 26

    Join this LEGO team to build fully functioning machines. Using LEGO designs, this week will have your camper creating simple machines and testing their functions. Campers will also be given time to design, create and test their own machines. This week is a step up in complexity from our Little Lego week, and will challenge campers to build new creations! Each camper will be given a set of LEGO Simple Machines to use for the week and keep!

  • Little Legos - Grades K - 2

    Love building and creating with LEGOs? This week of LEGO fun will have daily build challenges to excite your camper and guild them into some fun creations. Little LEGOs will also have free build time for those free-spirited builders. From building their first LEGO car to a tiny LEGO village, this week will have everything your young camper needs for LEGO fun! Each camper will be given a set of LEGOs that is theirs to keep!

  • Marine Biology - Grades 5 - 8

    In partnership with Mystic Aquarium, our Marine Biology Specialty Session is a unique, hands-on exploration into marine life of all types. Throughout the week, campers will have the opportunity to work with members of the Aquarium staff as they learn about sharks and Beluga whales, dissect a squid, and explore samples from the local Long Island Sound ecosystem in our school science labs. Campers will take a day trip to Mystic Aquarium where they will feed Sting Rays, explore the Birds of the Outback exhibit and take a behind the scenes tour. This unique program allows campers the opportunity to learn and play while exploring the exciting world of marine life!

  • Soccer - Grades 1 - 6

    This program will provide a fun and challenging environment for players at all levels to improve their skills. Campers will participate in a variety of drills and games designed to improve their technique and skills in dribbling, passing, and kicking. All campers must supply and wear their own shin guards.

  • SSAT Prep - Grades 7 - 8

    This series of SSAT Prep classes will train students in test-taking strategies specifically for the SSAT. Each week in the series will focus on a different subject area covered in the SSAT. Students use software from Test Innovators, which contains six full-length practice tests, to diagnose areas of strength and weakness in a student's knowledge. Students will learn how to use the software most effectively to improve their results. Each class will include one session with Test Innovators trainers, streamed live from Seattle, Washington.

    Please note: Prices are per one-week session. Enrollment in this program requires a one-time software purchase of $240 not included in the fees below.

  • VEX IQ Robotics - Robots in Space! Grades 3 - 6

    Grades 3 - 6 
    June 24 - 28
    Ever wonder how robotics can be implemented for space exploration? This week will be jam packed with mini challenges addressing some of the basics of coding using Modkit for VEX, all while simulating robotic applications in space. Campers will work in teams to figure out how to get their robot to complete basic functions as well as more complex ones. They will discover how to program sensors as they collect samples, avoid hazards, perform basic tasks, and more! Instructor Olivia Delaney, Renbrook Upper School STEAM teacher, is back for her fourth summer with RSSA!
