Specialty Sessions

Passionate about writing? Are you a budding scientist? Looking to up your game? Our specialty camp sessions held throughout the summer are a perfect choice! Each specialty camp session takes a deeper dive into one of our themed areas while providing opportunities to balance the camp day with a variety of other activities.

Camp Day Options
Full-Day Only Camps (8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)
Led by specialists, these camps focus on days filled with instruction and hands-on experiences. All specialty week campers have a lunch break and camp-provided snack incorporated into their day.

Half-Day or Full-Day Camps (Half-Day: 8:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Full-Day: 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)
Some specialty sessions are half-day, with the option to extend to a full-day. In the morning, theme-specific specialists lead these camps. Campers opting to stay for the full-day have their afternoons filled with recreation activities through participation in our free-choice program and an optional free swim. Both half-day and full-day campers will have a lunch break and camp-provided snack incorporated into their day.

Please note: Due to the focused nature of these programs, specialty session campers will not participate in swim lessons. Campers should be entering the grades listed in the Fall of 2018.

  • STEAM

    Building on our highly successful and innovative STEAM program at Renbrook School, summer is an opportunity to dive more deeply into a particular passion. Campers experience hands-on, inquiry-based activities in our school’s dedicated science and technology rooms. The goal is to excite campers who love science, technology, and engineering while integrating math and language arts into daily activities.
  • Sports

    Led by Renbrook's athletic department, the focus will be on fundamental instruction, hands-on experience, skills, and drills. Gameplay and scrimmages will give your sports enthusiast every opportunity to develop and showcase their athletic talents. The goal of our sports week is to develop each camper's skills based on individual needs and aspirations for their sport.
  • Scholastics

    Summer is a time to re-charge the learning batteries, but in the fast-paced world of today, maintaining skills give an advantage in the new school year in the fall. Renbrook School Summer Adventure will offer a variety of ways to stay connected to the academic mindset and have fun while doing so.

  • Advanced Creative Writing - Grades 5 - 10

    Grades 5 - 10 
    June 25 - 29
    Taught by a member of the Renbrook School English Department, Advanced Creative Writing is designed for students to create forms of descriptive writing, drama, poetry, and fiction. Vocabulary development, creative writing technique, and skills are explored throughout the week. Each camper will create unique works that might include fiction, poetry or essays. At the end of the week, the entire group will publish an e-book of all of their combined works.

  • Advanced Gymnastics - Grades 4 - 6

    Gymnasts will spend the week working on skills for vault, bars, beam and floor. Focus will be on development with exposure to higher level skill sets. Each day will start with a group stretch followed by work on at least two events. Handstands, cartwheels and bridges will be practiced each day. On Friday participants will travel to The Gymnastics Training Center in Simsbury to utilize the spring floor, tumble trak, and trampoline.

  • Creative Writing - Grades 3 - 6

    Grades 3 - 6

    (Two-week commitment)
    Gathering together a community of young writers and readers, this specialty session helps campers develop the vocabulary and critical-thinking skills necessary to produce and discuss writing in sophisticated ways. Students will explore and author a range of writing assignments, some of which they choose themselves with the instructor’s guidance. At the end of the two-week session, the entire group will have the option to publish an e-book of their combined works.

  • Drone Week - Grades 7 - 10

    Grades 7 - 10 
    July 23 - 27
    In this hands-on specialty week, campers will learn how to safely control a GPS-enabled drone, including take-off, landing, basic flight, camera control, and more. In addition, campers will trade their controller units for soldering irons as they work to build their own drones, perfect for indoor and outdoor flight, while also learning some basic principles of electronic circuitry.

  • Gymnastics - Grades K - 3

    Gymnasts will spend the week learning gymnastics in a non-competitive environment. Focus will be on basic skills development on beam, floor, and uneven bars while keeping it fun. Each day will start with a group stretch followed by work on at least two events. Dance and strength work will also be introduced for each event. On Friday participants will travel to The Gymnastics Training Center in Simsbury to utilize the spring floor, tumble trak, and trampoline.

  • High Adventure Week - Grades 7 - 10

    Grades 7 - 10 
    July 30 - Aug 3
    During the week of high adventure, campers will navigate local rivers, explore caves, climb vertical rock faces and hike to summits. Campers will adventure within the Farmington River Valley and surrounding environments. Trinity College’s Outdoor Education students and staff will instruct and guide campers on this week of high adventure culminating with an adventurous Tyrolean Traverse.

  • Marine Biology - Grades 5 - 8

    In partnership with Mystic Aquarium, our Marine Biology Specialty Session is a unique, hands-on exploration into marine life of all types. Throughout the week, campers will have the opportunity to work with members of the Aquarium staff as they learn about sharks and Beluga whales, dissect a squid, and explore samples from the local Long Island Sound ecosystem in our school science labs. Campers will take a day trip to Mystic Aquarium where they will feed Sting Rays, explore the Birds of the Outback exhibit and take a behind the scenes tour. This unique program allows campers the opportunity to learn and play while exploring the exciting world of marine life!

  • Soccer - Grades K - 6

    This program will provide a fun and challenging environment for players at all levels to improve their skills. Campers will participate in a variety of drills and games designed to improve their technique and skills in dribbling, passing, and kicking. All campers must supply and wear their own shin guards.

  • Sports & Athletic Conditioning - Grades 3 - 8

    Sports & Athletic Conditioning is a program designed to challenge and inspire campers of all skill levels. Campers will explore multiple sports and conditioning techniques led by expert coaches with a focus on teamwork and sportsmanship. Participants will work on strength, endurance, and flexibility to prepare for the fall season. Campers will also attend a Hartford Yard Goats game.

  • SSAT Prep - Grades 7 - 8

    July 23 - 27 - Verbal
    This series of SSAT Prep classes will train students in test-taking strategies specifically for the SSAT. Each week in the series will focus on a different subject area covered in the SSAT. Students use software from Test Innovators, which contains six full-length practice tests, to diagnose areas of strength and weakness in a student's knowledge. Students will learn how to use the software most effectively to improve their results. Each class will include one session with Test Innovators trainers, streamed live from Seattle, Washington.

    Please note: Prices are per one-week session. Enrollment in this program requires a one-time software purchase of $240 not included in the fees below.

  • VEX IQ Robotics - Grades 3 - 6

    Grades 3 - 6 
    June 25 - 29
    Back for her third year, Olivia Delaney will lead campers as they use Vex IQ robotics to build and modify simple machines with a goal of combining or automating them to complete a chain reaction challenge. After developing that foundation, they will build the basic drive-train vex model and enhance them with object manipulators to play "Robot Soccer."

    Campers will also explore sensor functions through a series of individual challenges. At the end of the week, campers will use their knowledge from the previous challenges to customize a Clawbot IQ with sensors and hybrid parts to compete in two challenges, one in tele-operated mode and the other in an autonomous mode.

Renbrook School Summer Adventure is a day camp open to three-year-old children through Grade 10, and a Counselor in Training Program for Grades 11 and 12 in West Hartford, CT.
