Grades 1-5: A Balanced Curriculum

In Grades 1-5, students continue the Responsive Classroom opening activity but spend the bulk of their day immersed in a rigorous, balanced curriculum. The curriculum includes a language and literacy program that builds reading proficiency and fosters a love of literature; writing in a workshop-style approach; mathematics using Singapore Math; STEAM, an integrated, cross- discipline approach linking science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics; social studies; Spanish; instrumental and choral music; visual art; and physical education.
One way learning comes to life at Renbrook is through multi-faceted units of study that enable students to see and experience connections among disciplines. For example, in the third grade’s Oregon Trail project, students don’t just study westward migration in history—they recreate it by building small wagons that they must maneuver through the woods and paths of campus, encountering setbacks and engaging in problem solving. The interdisciplinary project also includes calculating how much weight can be carried in the wagons and budgeting for supplies, writing a journal in the voice of a traveler, reading pioneer literature, and learning pioneer songs. Additionally, Renbrook’s lower school clubs program offers a wide array of before and after school activities like running, and chess that support and/or augment the daily curriculum.
