 | Renbrook's safe and beautiful campus is home to a remarkable preschool program which is called The Beginning School. This school-within-a-school begins with the 3- and 4-year olds, and continues through Junior Kindergarten and into full-day Kindergarten. Here, children enjoy the arts, music & movement, physical education, the school's 21st Century library & technology center, gymnasiums, playgrounds, nature walks and more. Across the curriculum, teachers incorporate the Responsive Classroom approach into their teaching, emphasizing social, emotional and academic growth within a strong and safe school community. Research has shown the connection between cognitive growth and social interaction. We now know that children need certain social skills -- cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy and self-control-- to succeed academically. In terms of academics, the Beginning School's program starts with the 3-year-olds, strengthening the skills of listening, talking, reading and writing through literacy development. Children learn mathematics, science, social studies through hands-on projects like the nature museum news on this page. Spanish and French language classes begin in Junior Kindergarten. To learn more about this program in action, check out the teacher pages posted on the school site. In addition, the Beginning School students are beloved members of the Renbrook community, attending many of the school assemblies, marching in the annual Halloween Parade, and forming "buddy classes" with students in many of the other grades. For working parents, before- and after-school care is available. For information about application, click here.
